eTrex: clear screen of death

GPS unit malfunction:   unit turns on normally, acquires satellites, shows Trip Computer page, then turns clear with a single, narrow vertical line, and can only be turned off by removing a battery  --  can this problem be fixed without sending unit to factory for rehab?  Unit description:   Garmin eTrex Legend GPS receiver, B&W.
I have already bought a new, identical unit from Ebay for less than the cost of Garmin rehab, so I now have a useless paperweight which I could invade, if necessary.

Electronics issue on the unit.  No unless you are willing to take the system apart to find the offending part or parts it is a paperweight.

Not worth the time.

Personally I would sell it on ebay or similar and get what you can out of it.  Be sure not to misrepresent the units functionality.

I found a solution to this problem:  perform a master reset on the unit as follows:
-With the unit turned off, press and hold the follow buttons: PAGE +
ENTER, then press and release the POWER. The unit will power up asking
if you want to release all user data. Select yes and the unit will be
reset.  After the master reset please place your unit outside so that it has a
clear view of the sky for 25 to 30 minutes so that the unit can acquire new almanac data.
This solution worked on my newer unit, and did not work on my older unit, so it must be
serial-number sensitive (both have the same OS version).  This solution was provided by
the Garmin product support group, who said that the unit was probably corrupted with
data occupying incorrect memory addresses, or with corrupt data.
