ctrl-break wont break out of VBA on Dell laptop running XP

I just got a Latitude D630 running XP and Office 2003 I use for VBA development. problem is ctrl-break does not break when a program is running like it does on all other PCs I've worked with. I have tried every combination using the Ctrl, Fn, Break (Pause) key, but nothing works.

If I enable Application.EnableCancelKey in VBA the Esc key works like the ctrl-break should, but this is not what I want (to capture the esc key).

    Easy thing to try first - plug in a usb cable - and try that.
    If that works - then you might have an issue with the notebook keyboard.

    Otherwise - check that these aren't assigned.
    At start of macro

    Application.EnableCancelKey = wdCancelDisabled

    At end of macro

    Application.EnableCancelKey = wdCancelInterrupt
