Adding Alias to SQL Server 2000 Instance, so it can be used to ODBC DSN connection Strings

Hello Experts,
i came across an issue where i needed to add an alias to Sql Server 2000 instance so that when we move sql server to a new location, i dont have to change the dsn in all the web applications to point to the new server instance but instead the new alias would be the same name as it originally had and the old server will be taken offline.

I did try adding TCP/IP alias to client network utility, but it seems i will have to add that to alll the clients. The idea is to not have to change anything on the client side and add in an alias in sql server so that all the dns's pointing to old sql server (Through Server Name) will now point to the new one.

Just for your info, the old Sql Server does not have a instance name and hence its Computer Name is the name of the sql server and that's how we point it in all the odbc connections. The new server does have an instance name and i was hoping i could add another alias so it looks like the old server.

thanks for your help in advance.

that is right.

you could also change the dsn entry, but again, on all the clients.

you cannot make a "server"-side alias.

Hello, thank you so much for your quick reply, after renaming the server, can i manually take off the instance name and default the sql server to the default computer name or would i have to re-install sql server for that??

thanks

no, instance name cannot be changed.
you can, though install 2 instances (of which one could be "default") along-side.
