Recording Streaming Video - Jump TV

Hello,

I am interested in recording streaming video from my Jump TV account.  I have a monthly subscription but many programmes are on at times that I am not at work.   I downloaded a trial version of WM Recorder but it seems to have a problem "Error in use" when I use the software.  I was wondering if anyone has any experience on recording using this or other applications in particular from Jump TV as this is quite different I feel from other examples - e.g. recording from You Tube.

Get a video capture card it comes with PVR. (personal video recorder)
Is this what your using?
http://www.xeep.net/jumptv-streaming-video-on-the-web-from-around-the-world/
Whats the player you get does it have any record options?
Since this type of recording requires a time line  scheduller and you'll need to capture output file in small sizes such as WMV.
How big is your hdd?
What video card do you have?
Is this on your desktop I ws thinking if your vieo card supports tv out and youhave a vcr you could  attach your pc to the vcr and record them
My video capture winfast for example from leadtec

There is desktop capture programs a few free but the output size maybe rather big. And once again you need a schedual.

Hi,

Thanks for all the info.  The website being used is www.jumptv.com - basically - when you login it starts streaming.  The product I referred to above is:  www.wmrecorder.com .   The video card option does seem interesting but I'm a bit reluctant on opening PC at the moment as it is tinkering on breakdown - hence the software approach is where I am looking.   My video card is very old - not sure what it is and also - DVD player is not a recorder (I don't have a VCR anymore).   Also, the end goal here is to record it in a format readily accessible on my PC - e.g. .avi, MPEG etc so that I can do another process of converting into ipod format (I am confident i can do the ipod conversion easily).

I have used CamStudio and SnagIT and due to the way they capture - i.e. more like a screen recording of anything and everything that happens on your screen - they are not really what I am looking for.  They also have incredibly large file sizes so not pragmatic if I wanted to do several hours of recording.

Thanks Raheel  Looks like your on the ball  :)
I  took a look at wmrecorder looks like it will do exactly what you want and is the recomended.
Which version of WMP do you have installed it's recomended 9 or 10. My preferrd is 10 version 11 is too complex on the security side of things with internet access.
How much ram hdd space you have also  processor speed your computer it keep up okay?

WM Recorder 12 User Guide
http://www.wmrecorder.com/user_guide_12.htm

also its possible a firewall blocking it, have you added this program to windows firewall exception list?
In control panel windows firewall exceptions.
What AV do you have installed? Norton is very serious  best option uninstall it AVG free is a good alternative.

At jumpTV they have a FAQ  all these FAQ are worth looking at  to decide if your system supports the requirements.

Thanks Merete - I will get back to this post in a few days - have some professional exams on Tuesday *sigh*.  I will then give it a try out.  I downloaded demo version on their site (Version 12) which is fully functional and FAQ's aren't too helpful with specific error.  I had thought of Antivirus being an issue as I do have McAfee Security Centre.  However, this prompts before trying to make connection and after granting access I assume it should not be an issue.   I don't think RAM is an issue - it tries to connect to the .asf file - the application automatically starts recording when you open the streamling url - however, it shows 'error - file in use' error message.  It attempts multiple protocols - e.g. http etc when the first attempt fails so seems to be quite clever but each time it comes up with same error.  It could be that Jump TV have installed something to prevent applications like this working.

I have put in a support request too on the website so will see what they get back to me with.  I was thinking it might be a simple setting issue.  In honesty I am reluctant to trawl through manuals too as I don't have time!  I don't think it is a password issue either because the application is designed to enable you to access these sites too.   Thanks for giving some pointers - will get back to this in a few days after troubleshooting and following your tips (e.g. disabling McAfee and all pop up blockers and seeing impact).

Whats your bandwidth and processor speeds?
I might download the trial myself and test it on some of my live TV I have here see how it goes and report back my findings.
It could be that Jump TV have installed something to prevent applications like this working. It recomends WMrecorder?
Try a test on Winamp yourself
as its streaming live try capturing a live video playing in winamp
Winamp has the media library shoutcast free movies and live TV radio etc.
Just use the free version

Hi,

I have had a reply from Applian Tech (makers of Jump TV).  They stated:

"Unfortunately JumpTV runs off of a flash-based media player, so it cannot be recorded by WM Recorder. We are however, about to release a product called WM Cap, which is able to capture any region of the screen regardless of the filetype, so you could put the JumpTV player in full-screen mode and record this way. It will also record sound. Let me know if this program interests you and I'll let you know when it comes out. =)".

I would rather go for a product already on the market and don't wish to wait for a new product.  Also, I don't like the idea of a screen capturing tool as I know how these work.    Where I am quite confused and even doubting that the technical support guy has given me correct info is that WM Recorder claims to be able to record flash based streaming content and You Tube is in fact flash based streaming.  Furthermore, I came across this older version which specifically mentions ability to record from Jump TV.  I have done searches on Google where people say WM Recorder can record from Jump TV - even the older version specifically states this.

http://www.all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/streaming-video-recording-wmrecorder.htm

Also, it is an .asf file used in Jump TV which I understand is related to Windows Media (Microsoft) streaming so not sure where Flash comes into it - probably only related to the rendering aspect rather than the streaming server.

I will try out the other product suggested above on Tue / Wed.  Not convinced Win Amp is the solution.  If anyone would like my Jump TV login to test - please feel free to email me on "hennanra at nildram dot co dot uk".

I appreciate all the help and directions - I still need to find a solution to this :-).

Hi, yep - but so does the WM Recorder software - hence my point was that the support guy did not appear to know his own product.   On the website - WM Recorder explicitly states it's ability to record Flash streaming, .asf etc etc.  Hence the protocol or streaming method does not appear to be the issue here - I am guessing it is to do with some connection configuration or security setting.

I will try the  Hi Download app too though as there is no specific reason why I am choosing one product over another.  WM Recorder does have some advantages such as scheduled recording which are very useful but if I can't get past these stumbling blocks then I would look for an alternative.

From my test it seems to pickup the URL from whichever  media player or website that opens a streamed video, youtube was flash playback, I already had the swiff player VLC and winamp installed,
I think the default media player comes into play here, I have most of the features of WMP disabled as I dont want my system to use it winamp is my prefered
media player classic and vlc for movies the others run with thier files types.
I encountered only one URL gave a problem and that was when WMP was called in to palyback the recording and yes that was asf file. Said the file was unsupport
It works very good apart from that,  seems a lot of panels though taking up the desktop if you use another media player to actually stream.

Hi Merete,

Thanks for advice, any chance I could email you the login so you can do a quick test to see if it causes same problems.  This way I can ensure it is not just my PC configuration.  I have replied to Applian support - but I'm not inspired by their expertise on their own product!

Hi Merete,

No probs.  My account is hennanra / pw: saeed1 - www.jumptv.com is the URL.  You need to click on Myplaylist and it will show an Arabic news channel.   I will probably change this in a few days to be on the safe side.

I have access no problems, it states for me error in use, either someone is logging in as you as well or the server is over loaded.

I keep trying. Ok now I get it to work fine.
It starts recording and says ASF has no file association will use WMP instead yes/No I say yes.
records, I stop it then use play back I have Winamp with WMP 11 skin lol, it plays back in Winamp.
You need some codes that's all. Install another player such as Winamp for playback uses less than WMP. Which version of WMP
You say>> My video card is very old<< you need a good video card and lots of ram.
I have 1 gig of ram, 3.2 procesor Nvidia gforce 6600 GT video card

Snaps for you of what I did.
ASF error WMP fixes it.
Records when not in use

Very interesting indeed.... - I will try this tomorrow after my exams.   You appear to have done something that even the software makers didn't think is possible so well done!.... here is my latest response from Applian.  I am also going to experiment with HiDownload because if the response below is accurate - jumptv have targeted WM recorder specifically by tricking the application.  I think it is a bit unreasonable of JumpTV personally because on the same basis video recorders should be banned!

According to your post above, should I disable all associations to Windows Media Recorder?  If not, how should I configure extensions - presumably I should change the mime type for .asf in Windows Explorer so it has no association?  Do you have Windows Media player installed at all? My preference is to keep Windows Media player if possible as I do a lot of multimedia work that requires testing in multiple players before distribution to users.

Response from Applian:

"Hi Raheel,

Apparently I stand corrected, as JumpTV is Windows Media based. However, I remember now the story with JumpTV, and the "error_inuse" file. Basically, JumpTV gaurds against WM Recorder (specifically WM Recorder) by pointing to an encrypted URL which causes WM Recorder to attempt to download this erroneous file. A long time ago, JumpTV even had a script on their page that caused WM Recorder to close when it was detected by the page. In other words, WM Recorder can definately not record JumpTV. WM Cap however, should have no problem doing this as I have already tested it with JumpTV."

I will keep the user / pw there for a while until issue is resolved.  I have a Ge Force FX 5600.
I think I may have replaced the graphics card some time ago but completely forgot about it - so it appears to be a reasonable graphics card.   512MB Ram which seems acceptable I think.  I bought the PC about 5 years ago but at the time it cost 2.5k so was top of the range - Intel Xeon dual processor.

Many thanks for all the help - I am very pleased we seem to be getting close to a solution.

Kind Regards,

Hi Merete,

It worked!  Thank you very very much for your continued patience and helping me out on this.  I used WM Recorder 11 and I set it to Pro Mode, installed WinAmp and disabled all extensions in Windows Media Player 11 (I kept version 11 to avoid hassle of finding v10 etc)  - this avoided the errors being generated.

The resulting file is a .asf file but I can use a conversion software to change this.  The recording was superb.  Scheduler doesn't work - but I can live with that.  Slight issue with scheduler is that it forces you to specify one of three media file types - WM, Real, MPEG.  Trying MPEG doesn't work.  Anyway - I can work around by recording when I want - that was a nice to have.

I am awarding 50 out of the 500 points to sparmaker - hope that is ok as he did give some pointers.  If I could give you 1000 points - I would!.

Shall I have your password and account name removed from here now or you can yourself, post a request in community support general. here's the link

ask a new question, zero points its free, explain the edit you wish to have removed. and they will .

If you  have any security issues or internet access problems roll back to 10.
I stay with the older versions of some programs as they are still easy to use and less orientated about blocking everything they consider a threat.
It is simpler and still the best WMP out.

Hi Merete,

No probs - I will probably change my password in any case but i can sort out with admins re removing details.

NB. I may have even figured out a workaround for scheduling!  I am going to play around with Task Scheduler - effectively - if I keep WM Recorder open while leaving to work - as it auto records whenever it detects the stream - all I need to do is focus on using task scheduler to open Internet Explorer at the right page and close - I have cookies enabled to it should not require sign in.  This way task scheduler is my effective recording scheduler.   I love it when a plan comes together! :-)

Many Thanks,
