oh to add in xp, r/click the dektop properties Themes , if you change an icon you must save the theme as my theme to  in C windows  resources themes  otherwise it may resvert to the previous.
You can also install theme packs.
I use xp styler from TGT comes with icons packs as does stardock
http://www.tgtsoft.com/
I also use themes from stardock

ScanR,
You've lost me a bit.  How do I get to Course Customization?  Is this in display properties?

For the others, I'm just right clicking on the icon.  The DDS properties box comes up and I click on the Change Icon radio button and select a generic Windows icon like the Favoriites Star.

I'm not trying to import other or fancy icons.  I'm just trying to use the generic Windows ones, but they don't stick.

do they revert after a restart or they are just not being applied?
also, are you running both xp and vista on the same machine or facing this problem with two different machines?

MereteCommented:
seramai: windows has an inbuilt theme its called windowsxp,
these include the icons for all default files the folders, / shortcuts,/ programs, /music files/ drives, recycle bin,  etc etc.
If you change an icon away from the default it is changing this windows default theme called xp.
try it, change this icon/s then right click the desktop properties Themes you will one in there already called  either Current or windowsxp/ there is an option to save as.

If this an icon belonging to a program outside of windows same rule applies. Changing it from the default alters the defaulty theme.
If you use an icons from Vista doesnt matter you need to save the new changes as a new theme.

Your pretty icons dont stick, which are you changing desktop? inside folders? Are they windows files?

They revert after re-start.  I am running Vista and XP on different machines.

since its happening on two different machines running two different operating systems, i would assume that there is a program installed by you which is starting at windows startup and causing the issue.

can you look in start>run>msconfig>startup to check the programs and untick those which are common between these two systems. Do same for the Services tab after unticking Hide All Microsoft Services.

Merete,
The icons are on the desktop.  Even after I save the theme, they still revert to the Windows 3.11 looking gereric icon thingy.

thanks, one idea, this what I wouldI do,
 go to the host program/programfiles?
since most desktop icons are shortcuts to the host anyway,
in the program folder find its run program  create a shortcut from this one and then cut/ n paste onto desktop.
I am thinking here that  if the shortcut icon is different from the host program could explain it since it's pointing to the host.
good luck.

Merete,

The icons that are not sticking are not from programs, but short cut to the URL icon that I drag to the desk top.  I just noticed this.  Does this make a difference?

oh good we make progress, yes it does, these icons get deleted since they are stored in the temporary internet files folder.
I also save some these icons.
luckily I was posting in a similar question now they can work together, it's still in progress but the solutionis already posted.
This one is referring to the Favicon
To borrow from  War1:
Save the favicon to a folder, so it would not be deleted from Temp Internet Files folder.  Go to properties of the shortcut and 'change icon' then navigate to the folder to add the icon.

Yet but,

The icon I am trying to stick back isn't the one that I dragged to the desktop and was lost.  It is the replacement icon from the choice provided by windows when you right click on the remnants of the icon that was dragged.

Sounds like you just need to get a hold of a new link. Can you remember where or what it came from.
if its from the temp IE go there after some browsing find a new copy of it copy it out save it to a new folder then change the icon copy it to desktop

Merete,

Here is where it is from.
http://elearning.ipfw.edu/

I just grab the triangular ipfw icon next to the url and drag it to the desk top.  Within 24 hours it has reverted back to the generic icon.

Hi,
This icon is actually an imbeded URL behind the gif image.
I believe when they created this web site everything is being linked back to a source. The server that is hosting the site.
To change URL icon it uses  C:\WINDOWS\system32\url.dll  which is IE global default icons.

I saved the web page to my favourtites first.
all my URL's  in my favourites are available offline too maybe that's a key.
I then dragged it off my favourites list to my desktop and it has the icon same as the picture.
Do you have active desktop enabled?

I save many special web pages tha thave their own distinct icons  to my desktop and they never change their icons? Regardless of what I cleanout.
Maybe the way your saving it. Make it available offline.

I'll run ccleaner which will delete all my internet history temp files and cookies and then see if this changes the icon.

Okay after running ccleaner and rebooting the icon changed back  to the default  blue E.
I tried saving the web as  with the same outcome..
only time I can get the actual icon to stay that logo even after rebooting is saving it to my favourites first dont drag this onto my desktop but rather
then create a shortcut to it  from within my favourites off the start menue
cut that shortcut and paste it into my desktop..
It retained this logo icon even after rebooting.

When I do that it, it saves the icon to the desk top as a generic windows icon.

MereteCommented:
when did what,
when you save it to your favs does it have the logo?
then create a shortcut to it and cut that from favs to desktop?
do you have any other URL from site on your desktop/

seramaiAuthor Commented:
I saved it to my favorites.  I open the favorites, right click on the icon, create short cut on desktop.  It gives the generic icon when on the desktop.

something is deleting your temporary internet files;

do you have the Empty Temporary Internet Files When Browser is Closed option selected in IE>Tools>Internet Options>Advanced?
or running any anti-malware program which has the option to delete the temp files daily?

Dear Sheharyaar Saahil,

SheharyaarSaahilCommented:

or happens the same even for any other folder?
0

seramaiAuthor Commented:
Only when I place the shortcut on the dektop.

It does not happen for any other folders.
