Here is the process Landesk uses to determine patches
LANDesk core server, downloads selected group definitions (XML file) - these definitions tell how the agent how to determine if a machine requires the patch.
Once it has the definitions downloaded it will pass them out to the agent when the next Security and Patch scan is performed.
Once the machines are scanned and the server knows what patches are required it will download the required patches (unless you have selected download all patches not just detected - I wouldnt recommend doing this as its 40+GB worth of data)
It will then patch the systems, at the time you have set in your schedule or immediatly if autofix is flaged.

LANDesk, check all patches internaly with an around the sun team, including compatibility, their install script and if they uninstall correctly, they also check you machine based on the requirments of the patch not based on what microsoft update beleives. Because of this you will often get more patches with LANDesk as it alot more thorough than Microsoft (it will also download more than Microsoft).
