How to copy files from linux to USB external Drive

Hi guys i just installed linux on my computer and is trying to copy file to USB external hard drive.
But it gives me error saying "You do not have permissions to write to this folder".

when i try to do a chmod au+x <folder> it says Read only file system

You will probably need to format your usb drive into FAT format, so it can be read by windows or linux.

Are there any files on the drive?  If so, I'd backup them up to a windows partition first.

This should walk you through the process.  You'll want to format it as vfat
