If your display is fine with desired resolution etc, I wouldn't suggest you install ati binary drivers. Although if you have to you can download ati drivers from their website (http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html). You will also need your kernel source and headers.

For sound, you will need to install ALSA, if it is not already installed. If there is no sound coming out, check whether you are part of group named audio. Also check whether the sound is muted.

ok i checked the sound and the line in and some others where muted, ok sound works, ok what i want to do with the ATI drivers is what i do on Windows, i want to be able to play movies off my laptop to my Tv via S-video cable and headphone jack rca cable.  I usually use VLC and i know that is compatible with ubuntu linux how do i install VLC and then change displays?

why did u double post, i asked a question?
oops! somehow I managed to post my answer twice.

You can install vlc from the repository. First search to find out the package name

<apt-get search vlc>

you can install vlc then by

sudo apt-get  install vlc

ok when i did a apt-get search vlc it said invalid operation, i am logged in as me, i do su then password then i do a sudo apt-get install vlc ok that works ?  do i have to have a internet connection to install it.

how do i display what is on my laptop to the tv?
