Shutdown or Restart

I have a windows xp pro machine that is having a problem shutting down and rebooting.  Whenever I choose shutdown or reboot, it seems like the machine gets to a point and then stops the shutdown process.  There are a bunch of icons in my system tray, but when I move the mouse pointer over them, all of them disappear except the network icon.  I have to press and hold the power button to make the machine shutdown.  Then when I bring it back up I have to restore my active desktop.  What could be causing my machine to not shutdown and restart????????

Thanks,
Kendal

and what happens if you remove the network wire or disable network connection and then shutdown or restart the system?

I disable the network adapter and nothing happened.  After I manually power off the machine and restart, then do another shutdown or reboot, it works fine.  After being up and running for a long time will it not want to shutdown.  I will check out the links you posted.

Please check for any other software issues like spyware / spam etc. Use regclean to clean your registry. Run scandisk  or chkdsk and then check whether this again happens.

It could be a driver or service that could be causing this.

1. Check the behaviour in safe mode and with safe mode with networking.
2. If this works fine, then go to start-->run-->msconfig and disable all the third party services and startup items and then check the behaviour.
3. if this doesn't work, then try start-->run-->sfc /scannow.
4. If all else fails, then you'll have to do a repair install http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Here is the latest.  I have tried the Hive Cleanup Service and even went ahead and done a Repair of Windows XP.  The problem only occurs after I run windows for a little while.  If I restart the machine and try to do a shutdown or restart before I start doing things, it will work okay.  It is like I said before, it appears to go through the shutdown process, killing applications, but after that it just stops.  After the applications are closed, nothing else happens.  I can go back and open applications and use windows normally, but it will never reboot unless I manually power it off.

Did you try cleaning your registry.

Okay, I tried the RegClean, I ran the latest Spybot and Adaware.  So far everything seems to be okay.  I was able to reboot are a 30 minute run, which is better than it has been.  I will give it through today and if everything runs okay, I will award the points.

Thanks,
Kendal

Shasunder,
Your suggestions ended up solving my problems.  After doing spysweeps with adaware and spybot and then doing a registry clean with regclean.  Everything seems to be okay.

Thanks,
