asked on

MX record and mail server

Hello. I have a public server running windows server 2003. I have 5 public IP: 88.149.XXX.001 to ...XXX.004. I have web site running on 88.149.XXX.002. I set DNS with my registar my domain (mydomain.it) pointing to it for my web server. All is ok and web server is running. Then i set DNS MX record too for my mail server. I set mail.mydomain.it pointing to 88.149.XXX.001. Problem is that I cannot reach my mail server in any way. The pop3 service doesn't respond on .001. (settting client mail software as outlook to mail.mydomain.it). If i set client software pointing to .002 pop3 service is running and i can login and get mails! but, why isn't it responding with mail.mydomain.it (if I ping mail.mydomain.it from anywhere dns is ok: answer is ....002). Any idea? Thx in advance.

sorry, wrong typed, answer is .001 that is right. No I don't have. It's what I don't understand, I think. Do I have to run DNS service too on my server to have MX running?
As far as I am aware you would need a host record for mail.mydomain.com.  This needs to be added to the same zone as the current MX record.
