Windows 2003 server will not shut down but only restart

I have 3 HP Proliant dl380 g5 servers shiny and new just out of the box for a client. They have become an SBS box, a Terminal server and a Pervasive SQL server.

SBS 2003 Standard R2 was installed and configured without a problem ....except the machine will not shutdown.  If I click shutdown and give a planned reason it goes through the motions but restarts and eventually boots back up into windows.

I'm fairly sure the other 2 machines were shutting down fine until I joined them to the domain but now they're doing the same thing.  This makes me lean towards a windows issue but its not impossible that its some setting on the HP hardware.

If they weren't doing it before joining the domain, maybe it's a group policy?
I suspect an error is occuring at shutdown and the restart automatically is selected - the first step is to switch this off
Right click - "My Computer", select Properties->Advanced->StartUp and Revovery and click Settings. Untick restart automatically that may make the error message easier to see.

Look in the event log (Conrol Panel->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer->System Log
to see what errors are listed

For troubleshooting I often use "Do not turn off system power after a Windows system shutdown has occurred." as per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/819760/en-us.

I have had this happen myself. Updating to the latest HP support pack fixed this issue.

Are there any issues installing HP support packs once OS is installed?

Can't think of any problems, the Proliant support pack is structured for you to push it onto live servers from a workstation or integration server so it's fairly well tested. Good luck downloading it though, HP's website seems to be acting up today.

Thanks everyone for your help.  The HP product pack solved the problem.
to anyone running a server with Broadcom NICs, most commonly PowerEdge boxes... the April 07 rev of the BCOM causes a STOP 0x7E on shutdown that triggers an auto restart if the 'restart on failure' option is checked in advanced system properties.  Updating the driver to a later rev fixes this issue.
