I am runnng Cisco Call Manager Express on a Cisco 3650 PoE switch using VoIP for phone service. The present switch is full. I am going to add another 3650 switch and stack them. I will be connecting them with a Cisco SPF stack cable. I am looking for any guidance on how to best set up the new device and not have problems with the system after adding the new switch. Also and problems I might run into. I have about 3 weeks to get the switch on line but prefer to have it set up sooner.

The Cisco docs for stacking switches are pretty through http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3750e_3560e/software/release/12.2_37_se/configuration/guide/swstack.html#wp1044402

as far as setting them up, as long as the new switch is essentially just an expansion the process is pretty straightforward. is there something specific you're wondering about that might requir some detailed explanation?

there's not much issue as far as stacking switches for voip, just make sure your cos/qos settings and VLANs are set accordingly, but otherwise, there's not real issue with stacking. If you only have two of them, you may not need to go through the whole hassle of stacking them, since it's really only one additional device to manage and one more IP, but yeah, there's no real issue with doing it. Just make sure your qos/cos values line up. So if you've got your L2 trunks then you setup cos and map to the L3 DSCP values.

I will need explanation for the statement "map to the L3 DSCP values.". That is beyond my experience level.

sorry, I was asking, how you're doing the QoS. Your DSCP values are essentially just an expansion of the tosbit. Depending on what markings your endpoings are using for QoS (say and IP precedence value of 5) you may want to re-mark that traffic to an appropriate DSCP value if that's what the hardware in the middle will recognize. If you have a switch that doesn't recognize IP precedence but that's what your endpoints are using, you need to be able to re-mark that traffic to something that the switch will recognize, that's what I meant by the earlier comment.

I am just learning qos so I may not be providing the info you want. Here is a typical port on the switch.
Some of it I understand some of it is greek to me. The ports nvolved with the Polycom unit do not have any qos settings on them.

Switch#sh run int f0/4 - VoIP port
Building configuration...

Current configuration : 554 bytes
!
interface FastEthernet0/4
 switchport access vlan 200
 switchport mode access
 switchport voice vlan 100
 switchport port-security maximum 2
 switchport port-security
 switchport port-security aging time 2
 switchport port-security violation restrict
 switchport port-security aging type inactivity
 srr-queue bandwidth share 10 10 60 20
 srr-queue bandwidth shape  10  0  0  0
 mls qos trust device cisco-phone
 mls qos trust cos
 macro description cisco-phone
 auto qos voip cisco-phone
 spanning-tree portfast
 spanning-tree bpduguard enable
end

Switch#sh run int f0/39
Building configuration...

Current configuration : 360 bytes
!
interface FastEthernet0/39 - Polycom port
 description Polycom-in
 switchport access vlan 500
 switchport mode access
 switchport port-security maximum 2
 switchport port-security
 switchport port-security aging time 2
 switchport port-security violation restrict
 switchport port-security aging type inactivity
 spanning-tree portfast
 spanning-tree bpduguard enable
end

ok so from the look of it, on the cisco ports, you're fine on QoS, it should be done automatically. That should be fine as far as stacking the switches. It looks like on the Polycom ports you're not doing any QoS at all, so all the voice traffic there is best effort. If that's fine with you and you're not seeing issues, the config should roll to a stacked setup without issue. Otherwise you'll want to setup something on those ports or on vlan 500 for the polycom units.  honestly, in a stack setup you're only changing the management side, not really chaning the port configs so down at that level, it shouldn't make much of a difference.

connected switches and configured the connection ports. All is working except that the Call Manager express is only allowing 52 phones on the network. Mabey that is a limit for Call Manager express?

Confirmed. Literature says  a 2821 router with Call Manager Express will only support 48 phones.
