chkdsk error on customer disk

Getting error "unable to determine volume verions and state" when trying to access first partition on a disk with 2 partitions, while maounted in another xp pro machine.  wht tools can i use (remember, I already ran chkdsk) to see if I can recover data from this disk.   The 2nd partition, a recovery pertition, is wisible and functioning while connected to the test machine.  If the hardware was bad, i imagine BOTH partitions might not work.

I've had very good luck with Restorer 2000 (www.restorer2000.com).

If you find it necessary (and the data is critical) you can send it to a data recovery company.  The following is a good quality company.  http://www.gillware.com/customers.php

Thanks for both your responses....it's just a customer's daughter's laptop, and I thought if I could at leat attemt to repair the partition, I could get off the schoolwork, pictures, etc, that she had.    While we always like to find a free utility out there, I value the knowledge that some of you who have already encoutered this situation can offer.

I'll let you know how it works out.
If you're looking to repair the mbr or work with the partitions, take a look at the Ultimate Boot CD www.ultimatebootcd.com  It has a good selection of tools for this.

I might also add that the UBCD is free, so that might be to your liking. Another program specially designed for corrupt hard drives is Spinrite:

It might be a little more expensive than you're looking for, but it's out there. Best of luck.

the get data back program found files....and as most of the data recovery tools do, not necessarily visible  with a folder heirarchy intact.  End result..you have to do a search (which worked), and then copy and paste the files from the search results window to your existing recovery drive.

The search works with the free version, but when you attempt to copy and paste to your destination drive, the program says you must buy the license to perform that function.   This is to be as expected, and the price of the software is a reasonable 79.00, so I went for it and it worked.

thanks
Thanks and good luck.
