I am trying to create a parallel instance of sharepoint 2007.
I have another SQL server and another web front end. I have restores the Sharepouint DB to the parallel SQL server and installed Sharepoint 2007 on the new front end.
How do I now re-create the site etc.

This was a simple process in Sharepoint 2003 where you created a new config DB and restore site data by pointing at the SITE, PROF and SERV db's.

It's even easier in MOSS.

Run the "SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard". You will have the option to add the SQL Server name during the wizard. It will connect to the SQL Server and provide a list of possible DB's. Choose the correct DB and hey presto!

When i choose this i then select the restore config Db. This seems to keep all original server names. the central admin even routes to the live central admin  server?

That's because you are using a copy of an existing config DB. Did you need a new one? Is it not feasible for you to just add a new server and point it at the existing DB on the existing SQL server?

You need to add a server with the indexing role. Try here:

The IIS site will be created from within Central Admin if you are creating a new site, otherwise it will reside on the original server.
