JVM related  hs_err_pidxxxx log messages

Posted on 2007-10-11
Last Modified: 2013-12-22
Have seen some log files manifest themselves on my desktop. All of them have names start with hs_err_pid and then a number. All of them say something about the Java Virtual Machine and then a long list of processes.
I also notice that there is almost always a line in the log file about AWT or some media framework.

I have JRE 1.5.0_12. I run an application which is based on Java Applets and my OS is WIN XP SP2.

One sample hs_err_pidxxxx is pasted below the dashed line. Can anyone help this case?

    Assisted Solution

This problem cropped quite a bit before XP SP2 was release, but seemed to have died down since then.  The best solution is to upgrade to the 1.6.x version of JRE if at all possible.  You can get it from

if you can't upgrade to the 1.6.x, I have also found that for some people disabling the Java Console will solve this issue.  Do this by going to the Control Panel, double clicking the Java icon.  In th Advanced tab choose "Java Console" and then under that selection choose "Do Not Start Console".

i being kind of a started in java can not be sure about if it caused by a crash but there is a very strong pointer to that as these files are created only when I either close the application, the application closes by itself  or when I kill a java run time directly by going to Windows Task Manager. Updation of the JRE version HAS NOT solved the problem anywhere. This answer has been given by many when JRE 1.4 just came around calling people to upgrade to it. Alas, no help from that. I will keep my JRE to 1.5.0

    objects you are probably right!
