configuring faxing for Exchange Unified Messaging

I am trying to setup faxing in Exchange UM. Microsoft does a great job at defining how voice mail should be setup and how to configure sip on the call manager (running cisco CCM 5.1). I have followed these steps properly and I am able to receive vm on Exchange UM however the fax service does not work and I am confused as to how it should be setup. According to the documentation as long as I have t38 configure on my voice gateway Exchange UM should be able to recognize an incoming call as fax. I have tested this and it is not working. When I send an external fax i can here it go to my voice message and then the call is drop. Do I have to create anothe sip trunk for fax. Is there a special setting I have to put into my current sip trunk for fax to be recognized.

Here are my settings -

On the Voice gateway I am running mgcp and t38 is enabled globally.
on the mail recipeint in exchange and the Dial plan I have enabled receipt of fax.

What kind of gateway are your calls terminating to?  You may need to configure the gateway for fax receiving, telling it to take the fax, do the image conversion and giving it a destination for the faxes.

according to the documentation Exchange UM does the image conversion, however it relies on the ip gateway for sensing the fax tone and send a notification that a fax has been detected. I guess my question then is how to I get the gateway to sense a fax tone and send it to the UM server using t38. I have a Cisco VG that is using mgcp and i have enable t38 globally.
