I need to synch the global address book to my smartphones

I am using self generated certificates and OWA does work fine externally and internally.  The phones are synching everything also.  My problem is that I'd like to synch the global address book but looking at another posting it says to use the owa url (mail.company.com/owa) in the server name instead just the mail.company.com example.  Unless I am misunderstanding that.  I tried that and it didn't work.  I was successfully able to install the root certificate on the phone but if I install the self signed owa certificate it says it's not a trusted root certificate.  How can I get this to work?  I can access owa from the phone even.  I desperately need this for a couple of my users.

There is no sync of the GAL with Exchange.
It is designed to be checked over the air.
If the sync works then you should be able to view the GAL using lookup.

How did you try to import the certificate? A self generated certificate is not a root certificate, so any techniques you have found for the root certificate will not work.
When you use OWA on the devices I expect you get a certificate prompt? If you do, you need to replace the self generated certificate with a commercial certificate that is trusted by Windows Mobile. There are a few issuers around, GoDaddy, InstantSSL both issue trusted certificates.

I have 2 certificates, one was a root certificate I created and another was the self generated owa one.  It took the one I created (with Microsoft on the phone) and the owa it does not.  I do not get a certificate prompt on the phone, as the one that Microsoft helped me create as subject alternative names on it and works.  I would have to go back through my notes from that day as I'm pretty new in the whole certificate area.  The only way I found is to enter the name and do a check name then is what you are saying?  That is the only way I found - which my users do not like.

That is the way it is designed to work. You enter something and do a check name.
Blackberry works in the same way.

The reason is quite simple - the GAL could be very large. If you have a GAL of 30,000 users, that will not fit on the device. The idea is to have your own contact list on the device and the GAL is looked at live. That also means you don't have to maintain multiple lists.
