Antivirus Software that isn't a resource Hog

Is there an Antivirus software that isn't a resource Hog like Norton? I uninstalled Norton 360 from my Latptop (Vista Premuim) to see if that extends my battery life and doubled my battery life.

I'll second that AVG is an excellent product - good at what it does without the 'bloat' and 'resource hogging' that seems to plauge Norton/Symantec products. Its also free for personal/home use which is a significant bonus

I'll third that, AVG is as good as you can get ...& lite on resources.
To be fair to Norton, their 360 product is a security suite, so it contains a lot more apps than just an av scanner.  Having said that, I can't think of a good reason to use it...
For variety, as well as AVG, there is another highly regarded av program which is free:
