How do I customize the top navigation bar to include two sections with a split and two different styles?

My MOSS 2007 portal design calls for a top horizontal navigation bar with two sections and a spli/separator.  The two sections will need to have separate styles (color).  What's provided out of the box only allows for contiguous tabs and it seems that there should be an easy way to customize this -at least- by inserting an nempty desabled tab.

Anybody have had a chance to work on a similar issue?

Thanks,

just an idea here...
create one page with your "right half" elements on the right side....
create *another* page with your left half elements on the left...
then, on the first page (right half), add a web page viewer web part on the right and point it to your page with the right half elements...

this is the only way i can think to do this with the built-in web parts
your other option would be to script the page yourself using one of the other web parts that has an embedded scripting editor...

or possibly creating a custom theme...

you could always use Sharepoint Designer to get more control over your page design

You have to do this by editing the master page.  It's non-trivial but is a great skill to learn.

Search the Microsoft site, http://blogs.msdn.com/Sharepoint and download and install the Sharepoint SDK for more information.

PS  It's very important that any customization be managed using Sharepoint Deployment Solutions because it will be scalable and consistent for disaster recovery.
