Fresh install of windows sbs 2000

Greetings experts,

I am trying to install a fresh copy of windows sbs 2000 to a compaq proliant server. We intend to use this machine as a dedicated document server using sql server 2000.

As it was copying files from disk 1 of the sbs 2000 disks a dialog box displayed that winsrv.dl_ was missing and did we want to skip or retry. Retry failed so the file was skipped. I did attempt to clean the disk and started over but the error occurred again on the second install.

I have found a copy of the dll on the internet and was wondering if anyone else had this problem and how they solved it. We need to be pretty sure this install is clean as the document application needs a solid platform. Any ideas welcome. Thanks.

Do you have an existing domain?  If so, you can't incorporate this server into that domain.  SBS must be the FSMO master DC - you can't have two such DCs in the same domain (you can only have one FSMO master).

Point being is, you're better off going with a new operating system than one that is no longer supported and nearly 8 years old - you DID say you needed a SOLID platform.

Thank you for your point. You are right, we should have this application on a platform such as sbs 2003 and in fact, we are rebuilding a separate server in the coming weeks with this platform for exchange.

We were going to build a basic platform (in fact it wil be windows server 2000 rather than sbs 2000 as we will only install the basic installation) and see how the application behaves before upgrading it and putting it back on the main platform.

My task is to simply install the basic windows server 2000 from the disk i have. Shame that this one file is damaged/missing. Now, I wonder if i can copy the CD1 folder from the DVD disk and burn a disk that i could use to get a clean install. Do you know if this is possible?

Thanks again for taking the time to answer.

The problem above was solved by using new media and a fresh copy of smartstart 5.5. Thanks for your advise.
