Is it safe to turn on the Volume Shadow Copy service?

I was looking thru my list of services on my Windows 2003 Enterprise Server and noticed that the Volume Shadow Copy service is set on manual is isn't started. I would like to turn it on because I have a backup program that has Volume Shadow capabilities (Acronis) and would like to use it for my backups, such as SQL databases, Exchange Server mailboxes, documents and files, etc. I'm concerned on why the Volume Shadow is turned off by default. Is there anything I should be concerned about by turning this on to automatically start up, such as corruption, performance degrade, etc? This server is a domain controller, IIS web server and File Manager.

There's no problem with having the "Volume Shadow Copy" service set to manual. Whenever a program - like Acronis - needs it, it will start it and stop it again when it's finished.
Nothing to be concerned about.
Just don't put it to disabled.

Should you still want to set it to automatic, there's no problem with that either.

It will start are required, however  you may as well set it to automatic especially if you are using Volume Shadow Copy of shared folders.

i disagree, if you are not using VSS explicitly, then do not set it to auto, security best practices and basic server care should tell you to leave it set to manual and let it be started when need it.....why run your wipers on your car all day waiting for rain?

I don't think its good thing to turn on VSS on domain controller. You might problems backing up the system state.

Its fine to have it enabled on a DC, doesnt effect system state backups at all, only time i have seen a problem with VSS and system state was after the upgrade of Backup Exec 10d to 11d, where the System state componenent was read in an entirely different way :)

That might just be one problem you might have come accross with backupexec and we don't know about the other backup softwares. Also what is use of having VSS enabled  on a DC. I didn't try but can we restore a deleted OU or a user with the VSS.

no, VSS is for files. You can only restore an OU or user from a system state backup using ntdsutil in DSRM
