Quality Problems HP Photosmart - buy new or fix?

Struggling with my HP Photosmart C6150 Printer.  Works ok as All-in-one, but for printing photos - all prints come out very, very, very dark.

Have had good luck with HP 7200 and 7100 series - but the C6150 is kind of a dog.

The calibrate printer option doesn't seem to be available on this model.  I'm trying to print from Adobe Photoshop CS2 and I can't find instructions for advanced features - like whether I should let Printer or Adobe determine color options, etc.  Spend 3 hours on chat with HP last night and finally told to reinstall software.

QUESTION - Is this an inferior printer for printing photographs?  What is a good photo printer for under $300?  Or should I keep trying to fiddle with software and settings to get best results?

I'm scanning and printing lots of old family photos (from 1920s through 1990s) and I'm wasting DAYS fiddling around.  Would rather spend money at this point if I could just hit print and get good results.

Also will ask a question under Adobe Software category - about setting up advanced printing.

thanks, April
