Why do I need to have a router? Can I replace the router with the switch?

A router is right device though and it is fairly cheap nowaday. Use switch if you want, but I dont know if there is wireless signal for your laptop unless you will use ethernet cable for laptop as well.
Hi,

If you are using a DSL modem then a switch is enough.
