Backup solution for windows XP using SDLT drive

Hi, having issues implementing SDLT backup solution on a Windows XP Pro PC

OS Windows XP Pro fully (SP)
Adaptec 2940uw SCSI controller card (PCI)
Compaq 110/220 SDLT drive internal
Backup Assist software for backup solution ( uses Windows NTBACKUP native solution)

Having been supplied an SDLT drive and SCSI card I have installed them into the PC and loaded the relevant drivers and confirmed the SDLT drive is running on the latest firmware revision from HP, despite running HP tape tools which confirmed the SDLT drive was functioning correctly, the backups keep failing 1/2 way through which reports a hardware issue. " unable to execute rewind command". I have tried another SDLT drive and the same error occurs. Also if you then manually eject the tape and then try to re-insert it the tape is immediately ejected and will not accept it again until the PC is rebooted. I have taken the card and drive and tried them in two different XP Pro machines and again the faults are duplicated. On boot up the POST sees both the Adaptec SCSI card and 110/220 SDLT drive. I haven't tried a replacement controller yet and I am not entirely convinced that he one I have is suitable for the SDLT drive if that's the case can anyone suggest a suitable SCSI card that will work with this tape drive bearing in mind that I only have PCI slots available. The SCSI cable is an internal type and has a terminator on the end of it. Has anybody out there had similar issues implementing a tape backup solution on an XP box?

1) Check that the tape SCSI terminator is off, since you have one on the SCSI cable.

2) Test with a different cable.
3) test with a different SCSI card.

What kind of SCSI connector is the Tape using ( SCSI I, II  etc ).

What model ?

How old are these ?

I hope this helps !

SCSI terminiator is off
Tried different cable
Tried different ard
Compaq 110/220 SDLT which passes HP tape tools test
Brand new tapes
Tried different backup software (NovaBACKUP)
Suspect SCSI card not compatible with drive. On NovaBACKUP log reports controller error same in event log just randomly aborts backup at no particular time.
I agree that it is time to try a different/ newer card.

the 2940 uw is pretty old. Is it new or used ?

It's not new but I have tried 2 of them now each giving the same symptoms according to the supplier the 2940uw does work with a Compaq 110/220 SDLT however it is not listed in HP's compatability chart. Lot of expense to purchase an Ultra 320 to prove a point and I don't have a PCI-X slot in my pc just a standard PCI slot  ansd need to know if the slot is rev 2 or not. However the Ultra 320 is supposed to be backward compatible for legacy devices, just need to know if anyone has had sucess using a 2940uw SCSI card with an SDLT110/220 with successful backups.

Yes to no avail. Burnt the midnight oil last night and noticed after the PC had been off all day I managed a successful backup but after trying a second one it fell over after around 20 mins with a controller error reported in the event log. Left it again for an hour switched off and then ran HP tape tools across it which reported over temperature errors it seems the drive maybe faulty. Contacted supplier and they are sending another drive hopefully this one will be OK. Will let you know how I get on.
