With no event log in WIndows 98, where can error information be found? Specifically, system locks up intermittently and I suspect hard disk failures, but wanted to confirm.

Disconnect all your dispositives from your computer, except the mouse and keyboard.
Try to start Windows.
If there are any problems, keep on disconnecting internal devices ONE AT A TIME and remember to disconnect the power cable everytime you have to disconnect another device (starting at the newer ones ) and try to start Windows again.
If you have no errors, then the last device you plugged out was the one that was Windows have errors.
