Used Iseries server
I want to buy a used Iseries box from ebay
I am new on how to buy a Iseries box ; I have always used one which was provided to me and was logging in thru 5250 terminal.
I saw many listing on ebay
IBM AS400, iSeries, AS/400 9406-550-0915-7463 3300 CPW ($120,000)
IBM AS400, AS/400, iSeries 9406-810-2467-7412 1470 ($29000)
IBM AS400, AS/400, iSeries 9406-270-2248-1517 ( $1300 )
I basically need something to run rpg code; install WAS for iseries , MQ etc

What release of OS/400 do you need to run? Do you need to stay current in the future?
V5/R3 OR V5\R4
Will you need software/hardware support?
No, we are IBM Business Partner so we can create PMR and also hae access to software
Do you actually need to physically _have_ the box or would time on a shared box work?
If I have shared access will I be able to install any software like
MQ
WebSphere
WebSphere Commerce server etc
Beware of what you see for sale. Those systems may or may not have legal software licenses. Without a license, upgrading will be difficult.
Please reply to the above, and we will be glad to help!

royalcyber:
Step 1. _Count_ on spending at least $10k to get a reasonable system, unless you can find someone willing to part with licenses for both OS/400 and the compilers for essentially nothing. There might be a few out there, but everyone else looking for a similar deal will also be looking, including 3rd-party used-systems resellers.
I'm not sure there is a Step 2.
If simple programming is a fundamental objective, you'd be better off looking into the various time-share options.

Since you are a business partner, you may run into customers with old machines that have been upgraded to newer systems. The customer may just give you the machine. One of these older systems may do what you need.
Please note that in these situations, the software licenses have been transferred to the upgraded system. Using the software would be against IBM's licensing rules. For v5r3, the operating system license goes with the server. To get legal licenses for the other licensed programs, you can buy them for a fraction of retail from third party hardware vendors. Alternatively, you may be able to scratch and reload the system when the temp licenses run out, usually every 70 days.
If you would like a detailed example, let me know. I could go through the licensing exercise with my system.

Hi RoyalCyber,
First, I think we need to know a bit better of what you want... What is your gold on this. How many people do you expect to have on the machine ? Do you plan to use it much ? To develop on it ? What is your budget ???
Yes, you will have to pay for licencing and be sure to have a machine not to old (not upgradable) if it's for long term. But basically, what are your needs ?
These answers will guide us to the better solution for you...
