PAC files and access to FTP

We are using PAC files in our environment.

We are currently testing McAfee on a few systems. McAfee is trying to connect to the McAfee FTP site and download updates. With the PAC file, this does not work. With the PAC file disabled and machines connecting to the open internet, they can update.

How can we resolve this? This is bizarre since I understand the PAC only sets what is considered to be inside and outside the network.

Does anyone have any ideas of changes we can make to allow the clients to connect to McAfee FTP site?

a first good step would be to make an etherel trace on the machine hosting McAfee soft and see protocol/url is use.
If you use PAC files, then you must be using one or more proxies. Can't you see what's happening on the proxy in terms of protocol/URL accessed ?
Maybe if you look at your PAC files, you could have some DIRECT statement on some protocol or URL that could be prevented by firewall rules...

    hope this helps

just a quick one; to check whether the PAC file is indeed relevant, I'd like to create a test one that sends all requests outbound and also one that directs everything internally.

I guess these PAC's would only have one line each. Do you know what I'd need to write?

unfortunately, I never wrote PAC files... I just had to deal several time with them.
