Microsoft Outlook Message and Text Previewer Error.

Hello;

I have an upgrade install of Office 2007 Premium that is getting an error when trying to open email attachments that are other emails (I think they are .eml extensions).  When I double click them nothing happens, if I right click on them and select preview it gives me an error about the Microsoft Outlook message and text previewer.  I tried running a repair on the install, but that didn't help.  I followed the online help that had me check that the previewer was enabled and it was.

Machine is a Dell D630 running XP Pro SP2 and Office 2007.

Greetings wbithelpdesk !

Outlook is likely blocking the attachment.  To disable the blocking, add .eml to the Level1Remove key in the registry
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/esecup/getexe.htm
or
Use TweakOL2003 to Dis/enable Attachment Security
http://www.freewarepub.org/freeware/TweakOL-2003.html
or
OutlookTools to unblock attachments
http://www.howto-outlook.com/products/outlooktools.htm

Hope this helps, war1

Can you save the attachment as a file first, then open it?

Check if Outlook Secure Temp Folder OLKxx is full. Delete its content.

If no joy, run Outlook in safe mode.  With Outlook close, go to Start > Run and type

outlook /safe

and hit OK to apply.  Then test if you are able to open attachment.

Tried saving it and opening it outside of Outlook with no luck.  I will try emptying the OLKXX folder and let you know.  Thanks!

.eml file is a Outlook Express email format.  If you save the file, drag and drop it to Outlook Express reading pane to see it.

I looked for OLKXX file and I couldn't locate it on the PC.  I have the view set to Show hidden files and folders and I have unchecked Hide protected operating system files.  I looked in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK*. I did try in safe mode and it worked correctly.  Also, the attachment is a .msg file not a .eml.  Sorry for the confustion on that.  Any ideas?

OLK folder is hard to find. Navigate to OLKxx folder by the following method.
http://www.outlook-tips.net/archives/2003/20030828.htm

Msg file is Oultook formatted email.  Once you save the attachment as a file, in Outlook, you can go to File > Import the file.

Sorry for the delay.  I looked at that link and went into the registry and found what I think is the 2007 equivalant of what you where looking for the reg key I used was HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Security and the key is called OutlookSecureTempFolder.  It sent me to a path of C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.Outlook\0EJNPN7U\

I deleted all the contents of that folder and tried it again, but go the same error.  I then created a new folder in the same folder called OLK and repointed the reg key to that with the same result.

I tested it again in safe mode and that does work.  I was considering a clean uninstall/reinstall, but wanted to see if you had any other ideas.  Thanks.

wbithelpdesk,

You may want to create a new Outlook profile before you reinstall.
