Assuming you're looking at a way of sending from your mail client via a gateway (I do this in my case as I travel a lot and the SMTP server would continually change), I'd suggest a product such as MDaemon. &nbsp;A 6 user version costs a minimal amount and functions very well as an SMTP gateway.

On the server side of things, an SMTI server is installed as part of the Internet Information Services. &nbsp;I've never installed IIS on XP workstation, so I'm not sure. &nbsp; If not, Google &quot;free windows smtp server&quot; and take your pick

Interactions between email servers and clients are governed by email protocols. The three most common email protocols are POP, IMAP and MAPI. Most email software operates under one of these (and many products support more than one).  The correct protocol must be selected, and correctly configured, if you want your email account to work.

Email Protocols

IIS is Internet Information Services, the web server included with Windows Server operating systems. All current versions are built on a modular architecture; modules can be added or removed individually so that those required for specific functionality are installed. The full installation of IIS includes HTTP, security, content, compression, caching, logging and diagnostics.
