False new USB message called 'image' coming up on every boot

When my son boots his machine, it always comes up with a USB notification of a phantom device called 'image'. My son kills the install new hardware dialog and everything is ok. What can be done to suppress this activity?

Right click on My Computer. Go to Properties | Hardware (tab) | Device Manager. If you have any devices showing a yellow exclamation point, and being identified as Unknown, right click on them. Go to Properties | Details and copy the Device Instance Id here.

There are three such devices.  The IDs are:

ROOT/IMAGE/0000
ROOT/IMAGE/0001
ROOT/IMAGE/0002
