My MSI Installer is broke

I attempted to install a .NET Test Application on a different server (Windows 2003) then we normally install to. This install uses MSI.

When I did the install I was prompted to Accept the agreement and Install .NET Framework 2.

It looked like .NET installed ok. There was a prompt to reboot (I guess it is possible I missed something on that message box) I closed it and rebooted the PC.

I then ran the ISD Application setup again and recieved a new message.

"The installer was interupted before MyTestInfragistics could be installed you need to restart the installer to try again"

I felt from the message box that it was talking about Windows Installer but now I am not so sure. Checking the Windows 2003 Server event log I found two entries right next to each other.

I installed Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0

The message logged first in the event log.
Product: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 -- Installation completed successfully.

The mesage box indicated it used MSI Installer for the .NET framework Install

Then I turned around and tried to install the ISD Application again.

The event log then said...
Product: MyTestInfragistics -- Installation failed.

Added note: On the server I uninstalled and went to Microsoft's site using Windows Update to install the .NET Framework 2.0 and then later installed .NET Framework 3.0.

I am hoping you might have some idea on how to get going with this server.

Chris

Is the Windows Installer at version 3.1?

Are you creating this package on Server 2003 to install on Server 2003?  It's looking like this may have been created on XP.

These entries:

Property(C): VSDNETURLMSG = This setup requires the .NET Framework version 2.0.50727.  Please install the .NET Framework and run this setup again.  The .NET Framework can be obtained from the web.  Would you like to do this now?
Property(C): VSDIISMSG = This setup requires Internet Information Server 4.0 or higher and Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 or higher.  This setup cannot be installed on Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me.  Please install Internet Information Server and run this setup again.
Property(C): VSDUIANDADVERTISED = This advertised application will not be installed because it might be unsafe. Contact your administrator to change the installation user interface option of the package to basic.
Property(C): VSDNETMSG = This setup requires the .NET Framework version 2.0.50727.  Please install the .NET Framework and run this setup again.
Property(C): VSDINVALIDURLMSG = The specified path '[2]' is unavailable. The Internet Information Server might not be running or the path exists and is redirected to another machine. Please check the status of this virtual directory in the Internet Services Manager.
Property(C): VSDVERSIONMSG = Unable to install because a newer version of this product is already installed.

Tell me the installer is looking for .NET 2.0.50727 - verify this on the server.
It's also looking for IIS to be installed - is it?

You can try reregistering the Microsoft Installer like so:

msiexec /regserver

Yes first I ran
msiexec /unregister
then
I tried to launch the setup again and that showed me a path to a log file

then I ran
msiexec /regserver

I then ran the setup again and now I can see a real log file. Not sure what to do with the info at this point though.

When I launch the program...
A folder is created holding the log file and the folder called dotnetfx and a file called dotnetchk.exe
the log file logs the following

The log is fine.  It's telling you the patch for .Net is installed then checking and confirming that .NET 2 is actually installed and no installation is required.

Your install package doesn't seem to be correct:

Are you creating this package on Server 2003 to install on Server 2003?  It's looking like this may have been created on XP.

I created the package on a XP development machine.

I am attempting to deploy it on a Windows 2003 Server. I was successful installing the same package on another windows 2003 server

Going over to the server room now to verify your next two questions

Tell me the installer is looking for .NET 2.0.50727 - verify this on the server.
It's also looking for IIS to be installed - is it?

The server has IIS V6.0 installed and running

"Tell me the installer is looking for .NET 2.0.50727 - verify this on the server."
The server has in the add and remove programs Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0
It als has a directory named ../v2.0.50727 which contains many files and folders

Netman,
The help that you gave me here helped me understand more about the installer log and it lead me to the fix which ended up being a complete server rebuild. This time I made sure the .net framework was installed before installing the program. Thanks for your help!
Sorry this took so long to close ... I forgot all about it

Regards,
Chris
