Can't open email attachments in Outlook 2007 on WinXP 64-bit

When I try to open an email attachment in Outlook 2007 by double-click, I get no response at all. I can save them, but I cannot open them. If I switch to safe mode (/safe switch), I can open the attachments just fine. Any recomendations to make them run in regular mode as well?

Greetings DarekD !

After saving the attachment as a file, you can open it?

1. In Outlook Save Mode, no addoi is running.  Disable addois in normal and then open the attachment.  Go to Tools > Trust Center > Add-Ins and disable the addins.

2. If no joy, check if temp folder where the attachment opens is full. Delete the files in OLKxx folder. The folder is difficult to find. Here is how to get to the folder:

Hope this helps, war1

Hi
Is your antivirus up to date?
Save the file and run an antivirus check on it to make sure its fine.
any way that person can send the email to a different computer to test.

Files that are blocked by Outlook;http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA012299521033.aspx?pid=CH100777061033

If you have no Virus then Outlook could be blocking the attachments here are some solutions from Microsoft;http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA100337761033.aspx

Hope this helps

DarekD,

Did you disable addins?

If no joy, what type of attachment?  Outlook blocks certain types of attachment.  Add the extension of attachment to the Level1Remove registry key
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/esecup/getexe.htm
or
Use TweakOL2003 to Dis/enable Attachment Security
http://www.freewarepub.org/freeware/TweakOL-2003.html
or
OutlookTools to unblock attachments

I believe the email attachment extension is MSG and is not listed on Microsoft website you've pointed out. Antivirus is up to date. Again, in SAFE mode, things work fine.

If the file type is not supported then the sender must zip that file or try other suggestions as shown here;http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA012299521033.aspx?pid=CH100777061033

Since when MSG is not supported type? It's been part out Outlook since day one. And again, it works in SAFE mode.

Doubling the points since the problem seems to be more difficult than I originally expected ...

In safe mode, no addons are enabled.  So I thought an addon is interfering in normal mode.  But you have disabled all addons and problem persists.

Disable programs running in the background that may be interfering. Disable one at a time antiivrus, antispyware, ad blocker, popup blocker like Google or Yahoo toolbar, and all Norton programs.

It seems that Office 2007 on 64 bit platform is generally unstable. Closing this question witouot resolution.

DarekD, did you disable programs running in the background?

Office 2007 is designed for Vista, which can run on 64 Bit platform.  It not designed for Windows XP.  Office 2007 may give some problems, but I would not go as far as saying it is unstable in Windows XP.

That's just a such a wrong thiing to say. If you go to M$ website (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101668651033.aspx) you will find out that Windows XP SP2 and later is fully supported. On the same page you will find a M$ note, which says:

"The 2007 Microsoft Office system programs client is a 32-bit application and can run on a Windows 64-bit platform (Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Vista) but there may be some feature limitations as noted in the system requirements below."

And there are some limitations listed with each release (Student, Basic, etc.)

Finally, the exact same release works just fine on my Win XP SP2 32-bit.

DarekD,

What is stated in MS article is not really is.  For example, Outlook 2007 works better in Vista than in Windows XP.  It runs faster.

I will give you the fact that Office 2007 does not work in Wndows XP 64-bit system.  It works fine in Vista 64-bit system.

Is there a way to give myself the points? Because I've just figured it out. Google Desktop was interferring with the MSG extension (default for email attachments). After unistalling, things are fien again.

Darek,

Glad you found the source of the problem.  Google Desktop has been known to interfere with other programs.

You cannot give yourself points. But You may want to post a 0-point note in Community Support board with a link to this page to close this question and get your points back.
