I need to search for the existence of any non A-Z character (e.g. ñ) in an oracle 9i table.  Any ideas?

You actually have two options in 9i...

The TRANSLATE function can be used like this:

SELECT LENGTH( TRANSLATE( my_string, 'ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ .,', '')) FROM my_table;

If LENGTH of the TRANSLATE returns anything but 0, then you have special characters.

You can also do something similar if you are a reg-exp person with OWA_PATTERN.  I've not used this at all but the the function is:

OWA_PATTERN.MATCH( my_string, regexp_expression )

If you cannot find the OWA_PATTERN package, make sure you've installed the PL/SQL Web Toolkit....
