I have a MacBook with the Intel processor (about 1 year old) and am trying to install a Western Digital Hard Drive that I just bought.  The instructions say it should auto install the utilities.  However, when I hooked it up via the USB, nothing happened.  I opened the icon to manually install.  When I click on the Setup.exe file, it says 'There is no default application specified to open the document "Setup.exe"'.

What application should I choose?   Or is there a better way to do this?

Setup.exe is the Windows application - wont work on the mac.

If you can't see the software .. just get a copy free from the WD Support website.

Pick your USB HD model and get the Essential Software for Mac

Yeah, I realized that right after asking the question.  So, do I clear off all of those files that came with it and then just use the device like a glorified flash drive--dragging and dropping files to it to transfer them over?

YES, wipe all that rubbish of the external HD

I assume the Drive is formatted FAT32.
If you will ONLY use it with a Mac .. then I'd recommend using Disk Utility to Erase and reformat the Apple HFS+ format as it will be better.

Yeah, I will only be using it on my Mac.

Do you have the steps on how to erase and reformat using Disk Utility?

IT is as simple as opening Disk Utility..  select the USB drive in the left menu .. go to the erase tab .. and select HFS+ extended as the format.

There was no HFS+ extended, but I just used the OS X Extended option and erased everything.  It reformatted and I was able to transfer over my pics and iTunes songs perfectly.

Thanks again for your help!
