During a recent SRX ticket, an MS technician performed surgery on my registry that later caused the Software hive to be reset automatically by Windows 2003 after it decided that the software hive was corrupt.

I believe that this caused the Volume Shadow Copy class to become unregistered.

That is why I need to reinstall the Volume Shadow Copy service on my Windows2003R2x64 server.

Would repairing my Windows2003R2 installation work?

If I repair the OS install, will that undo other hotfixes that I have installed?

What does the SQL server log say ?
Have you tried to disable shadow copy and enable it again ?

I'll answer your questions later this evening.  In the meantime, let me say that I was only trying to backup the operating system state.

My SQL server log says a lot of things, but nothing unusual.  Automatically scheduled backup are running just fine.  Is there any message in particular that I should look for?

I tried disabling and restarting the Volume Shadow Copy service.  Backing up the system state failed again and got the same errors in the Application Event Log.  The errors that I presented in my original post indicate that a Volume Copy Class is not registered.  I believe it is because my registry Software hive was replaced.  Would someone please recommend the safest way to repair my Windows 2003R2x64 OS?

It's a DC or simple file server ?
If it's a simple File server then you can safely just run a repair.

I just found [FIX: Event ID 20 "Volume Shadow Copy Service error" is logged when you back up the System State on a Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition-based computer that is running SQL Server 2000] at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/904418.  It seems to match my situation exactly.  It refers to [FIX: The MSDE writer is not included when you try to use the Vssadmin.exe tool to list subscribed volume shadow copy writers] at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913100/ for the hotfix.  I applied the hotfix and my backup started working again.  Not sure why it ever worked in the first place if this hotfix was needed.
