How can I make an option tag bold in IE7?

This works in firefox either by doing

<option class="boldText">text here</option>  or by using inline styles.   However the same does not work in IE7.

How can I achieve the same in IE7?

You can change the color and background-color of each option in a select, so I suggest you do that instead of using bold - it will still server the purpose of drawing attention to that particular item.

IE won't apply the bold formatting to the option, another example of how it is inferior to firefox yet again.
