What popular platforms does Java run on

A development language I am interested in says it can be compiled in Java format
What popular platforms does that enable me to distribute my programs on?
Does that include Palm pilot and Mac?

Java is able to run on any platform that has the java virtual machine installed on to compile the java code. This includes windows, mac, unix. You can get java to work on palm pilot as well.

If it can be compiled to Java, you will be able to run it on different platforms. However, depending on the platform, you may need to develop different GUI code. For example, to run on Windows or a Mac, you may program in Swing, but on PalmOS you must reimplement the interface using J2ME/MIDP. However, if you use Model-View-Controller for your architecture, your backend Java code that does the processing should be easily moved between platforms without (much) modification.
