Sending HTML mail with plain text alternative

I'm e-mailing an HTML document. This works fine in most cases but I'm concerned with what may happen if the reader doesn't have an HTML mail reader. I want a plain text alternative for those cases. How do I, in a single mail file, include both an HTML and a plain text version and the necessary code to correctly determine which to display?
