I am trying to have the right column to have yellow text, and red background, as opposite to the left column where there is red text, and yellow background.

What am I missing (doing wrong)?

Thank you.

First of all, IDs have to be unique - you have two #menu divs and many #menu anchor elements. They all should have different ids. You can use a classname for the <a> elements instead (a class can be assigned to many elements, unlike an id).

Also give one div e.g. the id menu1 and the other menu2 (or menuLeft menuRight).
Then you should assign the desired color and bg color e.g. here (for all links inside menu1)
#menu1 a {  }
