I currently have SQl server 2005 installed but have no service packs applied.

Do I have to apply sql server 2005 service pack 1 then 2 or does service pack 2 contain service pack 1 anyway?

Not necessarily, you can apply sp2 directly .

but why 'Not necessarily' could there be a situation where you would apply SP1 then SP2?
