How do I change my dovecot username / password?

Hello,
How do I change a users password in dovecot? I have it configured to allow pop3 access, however, whenever I try to authenticate with any password it fails authentication. I think my password is incorrect, but dont know what I set it to. How do I change my dovecot password? I have full admin rights on this server.

Try installing webmin (http://www.webmin.com/) - this has modules for administering dovecot which might make the procedure easier.

normally mails are delivered to all system users.  if you want to reset the user's system password (which is the default pop3 password as well) then login as admin user and reset password

passwd user_name_here

ygoutham,
Thats what I thought, however, in my case they are different, or my authentication is failing for an unknown reason, because I can login to the box via ssh with my username and password, and I can read my email via telnet with mail, but I cannot connect to dovecot with the same username and password .

What should I do?

Thanks,
Rick

is dovecot running and listening on all interfaces

netstat -an | grep 110

tcp        0      0 0.0.0.0:110                 0.0.0.0:*                   LISTEN

should start with a line like that and list all other interface addresses as well.  if you see only 127.0.0.1 then it means that it is listening only on the loopback interface

check in the /etc/dovecot.conf file and see what it hass to say for authentication

auth=default
auth_mechanisms=plain
auth_userdb=passwd
auth_passdb=pam
auth_user=root

these are what i have in mine and it works with system passwords
