what is the difference between security and distrubution group?

    A security group can be used to assign permissions to a resource, and can be used by Active Directory-aware mail applications like Microsoft Exchange to send email messages to the members of that group.

    A distribution group can only be used to send email messages, it cannot be used to assign permissions.
