Strange Ping Results On Linux Router

Hi All I have a debian linux router setup to as a gateway nothing fancy the usual stuff..the thing is that when I ping from my clients to the router the ping echo returns in <1ms and from within the debian gateway itself I can ping google with no time outs at all and echo returns always < 500ms . However when I ping google from my clients it frequently times out. What could be causing this..I am not doing any traffic shaping ....this is strange..any help please ?

Please note that the network connection is not saturated when this happens.

Hi,

How your clients are connected to you? I mean is there a router between you and them and what is the type of network link? Are they using private IPs?

Hi,

OK, how your linux box is connected to the internet?

Clients 192.168.0.0/24 <--Switch--> eth0 192.168.0.1 Gateway -- eth1 Public IP --> DSL provider

However I do not believe that it is the Internet link since pings from the Linux box itself to the internet work flawlessly

Any problems when you ping Server's IP from the client?

ie.

ping 192.168.0.1

Do you know if swith could give you a problem? Is it switch or hub, BTW?

Can you also post 'netstat -rn' from a client and the server?

Thanks.

I am sorry I can not send the nestats right now as I am not there right now..I will send those tomorrow.

Hmm....I got it ...I compared  my results based on two pings two google one from within the gateway..and one from a windows host behind the natting firewall linux.
However each ping was pinging a different IP, so I took the IP being pinged on the linux firewall and pinged from the Windows host...and there was no trouble at all..my fault was that I did not try to ping other destinations such as yahoo and solely relied on the ping to google. It seems that the route to one of their IPs was congested.
Thx for your help...Omar..you were great as always

I know that I assigned the points although those particular answers did not solve the prob..however Omar is always supportive and almost helps me out in most of my Linux Net related Qs..and 4dimach got me thinking again about what else I can try to solve it.

Hi,

Shakoush2001:

Thank you very much and be sure that I will always try to answer your any question from you even if the question is closed. Believe me I thought to ask you why you are pinging google and not yahoo, but I told myself that it would have been the first thing he did before posting the question.

Anyway the problem is now solved.

Thanks again :)
