Using FIrefox and the MSFT Task Scheduler, I'd like to schedule Firefox to open a new instance with a group of tabs

Using FIrefox and the MSFT Task Scheduler, I'd like to schedule Firefox to open a new instance with a group of tabs.  Currently, I have the URLs in a Firefox bookmark folder.  What I'd like to do is set the MSFT Task Scheduler to go off at 8am and open this group of URLs in Firefox tabs in a new instance of firefox, one URL in each tab.

Is there a way to do this?

I set up a shortcut with firefox and pipes ( | ) in the target, but I have too many URLs to fit in the shortcut target edit box (it's 1738 characters long!) cause it has about 24 detailed URLs in it. How can I accomplsh this?

Thanks,

Cash, Why not create 2 or 3 instances of Firefox instead of just the one? Obviously the one is much too long, so you could open 6 or 8 tabs in each instance and space them every minute or so, just enough time for you to read each tab.

I know it's not the ideal solution but it sounds like the 1738 characters is just too long. I don't know the limit of characters for that form, but I'm sure you'll find out.

yeah, the limit only allows three URLs to open and I have about 2 dozen, so I'm still on the search for a solution

what happens when you put 4 in?  Error message, just nothing opens?

8 instances of Firefox would drive me nuts.

oh, not 24 instances, 24 tabs, just want to make sure they open in a separate instance as a group.  Just don't want it to open up in an instance that I'm working in.

Basically, I put together the string you see above and pasted it in and it got truncated to where there were only 3 URLs that got pasted in.

Marc ZCommented:
Got it. Looks like the shortcut has a 256 character limit.

Let me see if we can expand that shortcut.

Hmm, workaround cause I don't see anything out there regarding defeating this 256 limit, but perhaps someone else will.

In Firefox, I use an add-on called TinyURLCreator https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/126
You can create a tiny url from each of the url's you are accessing and even save and use the shortcuts.  Each one will be about this long.

That's about 24 characters. Theoretically, you could still get almost 8 tabs in one window to open at a time.

I know it's a little bit of work, but it should only have to happen once.

Heck. I think it's the Paste function that has the 256 limit.  I can copy/paste your links to a notepad document, but when I try to paste it into a shortcut or Run command, it gets truncated to 256.

I wanted to be able to keep the firefox default as opening pages called from other applications as a new tab in firefox, so I ended up creating a DOS batch file.

The first line was just opening a new instance of firefox.  This made sure that I didn't just open another tab in an existing instance.

Then I paused for 5 seconds which gave it enough time to open.

Then for each webpage I wanted to open, I had a line in the batch file to open it.

It works well.

I guess the only caveat would be that if during the batch file run, I clicked on another open instance of firefox, as then it would start opening new tabs in the instance I switched to instead of the instance that the batch file started.  But that's a rare circumstance and as I fire this batch file off as a scheduled task when I'm not around, it's not an issue.
