External HDD Data Erasing & Recovery

I have a DELL Poweredge 2800 Server that was connected to it a Western Digital MyBook Essential 500GB external usb drive. I backed up all data from the server on to it and i left it connected.

I restarted the Server and ran Openmanage Setup & Installation CD, because i wanted to format and reinstall a fresh windows. I selected from the menu "erase all drives" and then i continued to setup the Raid Configuration.

After i was done, i noticed that the windows did not detect the Western Digital MyBook and via Disk Management it turned out that it had 500GB of unallocated space. Is it POSSIBLE that the Openmanage software erased also the external drive? or something just happen that corrupted the drive from restarting the server too much during setup?

Is there a way of recovering the data on the MyBook? Its a major catastrophe for me.

    Accepted Solution

It is possible that openmange wiped the disk, though it may be worth trying it on another system to see if that can see the files.

Another option is to try it attached to  linux system , you can get something like knoppix to boot from cd which may also allow you to look at the disk , if you have no joy then it is down to using something like runtimes.orgs  getbackdata, they have a free trial which lets you see if you can recover the files, though you actually want to recover the files you need to buy the product.

Hey, i did check the HDD on other PCs same issue : unallocated Disk Space. I will post to DELL asking about Opemanage having anything to do with it. I did download Acronis Director (demo) to check the partition and it came back that it could identiy part of the disk space, but i cannot recall if that was close to the disk space i had utilized or not. I have not started retrieving the data yet, but hopefully today. As for Linux, i am still new to alot of things so i did not want to risk it. I will tell you what happened when i am done. THX ALOT!
