Disk Read Error

Hi Everyone,
I have a Dell Latitude D600 laptop, when I turn it on, it gives me an error message :
"A disk read error occurred-press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart".
Besides replacing a new hard drive, anyone please help me if you have a better ideas.  Thanks.

you could try running the diagnostics from the disk manufacturer:
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm Drive fitness Test
http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/products/index.htm   Maxtor & Quantum
http://www.fcpa.fujitsu.com/support/hard-drives/software_utilities.html#diagnostic Fujitsu
http://www.samsung.com/Products/HardDiskDrive/utilities/shdiag.htm Samsung
http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/index.html  Seagate
http://support.wdc.com/download/#diagutils        Western Digital
http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT  IBM & Hitachi

This will tell you if it is the disk and you can go from there
It is good to start with testing as WallID said above.

You might also press F12 to test system during start up. Reseat memory, drive, etc.
Is your hard disk initializable I mean does it start with BIOS or not if yes then boot with a windows startup disk and do either a scan disk or if you do not want the data on it then format it
