P4G533-LA motherboard will not upgrade to XP Sp2

I had to replace the hard drive in a Compaq Presario S5100NX with ANUS motherboard P4G533-LA rev 3.17.  I restored it with the Compaq restore CDs.  It works fine in Windows XP SP1, but it will not upgrade to SP2.  Every time I try, when it reboots after the SP2 installation, it comes to the screen to select safe mode or normal mode.  No matter what I choose, it returns to that screen.
