Emails being sent to external addresses from one email address are being rejected on Exchange Server 2003

Using exchange server 2003.  Emails being sent to external addresses from one email address are being rejected.  When using the same from email address to internal addresses within the organization the emails go out.  Any suggestions?

Without the NDR it is impossible to know.
Do you know if there is even an attempt to deliver the message?

Simon.

What do the rejection messages indicate as to the reason(s)?

Yes there is an attempt.  The message back is as follows:

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:  XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

and
The recipient name is not recognized:
XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Are these errors specific to one user, or one computer? Or one user on one computer? If the user logs on to another computer and tries to send an email to one of the failed addresses, does it go through then? If so, the user might have a corrupt profile on the one computer.

email is being generated from a separate application and forwarded to exchange server with one specific from address -- one user.

Does this happen regardless of which computer that one user sends the e-mail from, or is the separate application only installed on a limited number of computers? If that user tries to send an email directly to one of the failed addresses without using the separate application, does the e-mail fail then?

It always fails.  Not being sent by a user. An application is sending the email.  This is not a PC based problem.

Sorry. Got it now. So, when the application sends the message, it always fails. However, when a user sends to the same e-mail address from outside the application, they are successful? What is the originating application? Do you have email relaying turned off on your Exchange server?

We had a similar problem with sending emails using the scan-to-email function on our multifunction devices. Internal messages were fine. Messages to external addresses always failed. In speaking with our vendor, we learned that the device needed to relay the email. We have relaying turned off, so could never send to external addresses.

Do you know where the relaying options are on Exchange Server 5.5?    I thought we were on 2003 but we are not.
