Hi

this is a relative question. The technology to compress PDF files is pretty much the same across most programs. If you already have Adobe Acrobat there is not much point to buy anything else. if not give www.pdf995.com a try.

It depends always on what content a PDF has and what you are trying to achieve. If you for instance have a single page with a single full page jpg on it you will get little or no compression. Same size page lots of line art and text, very good results with standard settings.

If you work in Acrobat try playing around with the compression settings in Advanced|PDF optimizer. These will be independently adjustable for color pictures monochrome and line art. try very aggressive settings first in the Images section and use only standard Fonts without embedding. if you have simple PDFs you can try discarding objects but beware of what is missing after optimising.

Then use 'Reduce File size' to try your settings. Adjust further to get best balance between file size and quality.

All the best, hope this helps

What I am thinking is this. One of our employee has 200-300 pages of documents, letter size, all text. They use Copy machine to scan them and set file type in .pdf. (Black, standard, DPI 200). That is what they need.  My concern is the size of the file. I want to know what is  some of the best compress PDF software outthere. Thank you in advance.
Hi

The answer may simply be in the compression of the monchrome image when scanning it in. if you scan this in at 96 dpi it should make a considerable difference.

If you use compression software you end up reducing the monochrome images in resolution afterwards, you might as well do this at origination stage. As there is little else in the PDF sophisticated compression settings will not do much more.

I take from your response that you don't have Acrobat, if you want to test some free tools try:
http://www.supershareware.com/info/free-pdf-compressor.html
http://www.download3k.com/Business-Finance/Other/Download-PDF-Compress.html

both are freeware compressors and may just add convenience to deal with your existing files

Hope this helps
Hi

To round up your question, ultimately Adobe Acrobat Professional may be the way to go if this is an ongoing concern as it allows you to finetune compression much further that the free tools but may be much more than you need right now.

All the best
My copy machine  display 200 dpi and higher. Doe it usually go lower than 200 ? You said 96. That is pretty low.
