hi
you can read an overview about mdm here
http://www.db2mag.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=167100925

setting it up is not a 1 fit all procedure,
every enterprise needs to set it up differently according to it's needs and current applications

the difference between mdm and a traditional data warhouse as i see it focus on 2 levels :
1) a data warhouse is a centeral database to hold data from many systems. One should maintain processes that update the data warhouse with data from the production systems. On the other hand, mdm contains a central repository of data, and the direction of data replication is opposite. you update the mdm and from there you replicate the data to the production systems
2) mdm is an entire infrastructure and not just a database, that is it enables you to perform buisness logic in one central location (kind of like SOA), and by this eliminate the need to repeat the same buisness logic in different production applications

i hope i was clear
anyways, read the article in the above link and it will make things clearer
